jukebox

a collection of songs i associate with characters or scenarios of p5. lyrics are included for convenience, personal formatting and error correction, highlights, and notes.

there is probably going to be a variety of band names with suspiciously similar vocals. this is because i like donovan melero and donovan melero likes being in 50000 things.

songlist, in order of being added:

hollow people

amaren

behold, the longstanding first and only song on my amaren playlist (pending a new addition i just selected yesterday). touches on the sort of one-way street he has in nearly all of his relationships.

ugly mismatching soundcloud embed because donovan melero is really bad at getting everything up on bandcamp. funfact the only reason his main band's latest album is on bandcamp is because i sent an email 6 months after its release to remind him. maybe i'll email about this single too. anyway

Nova Charisma · Hollow People
The hollow people know my name
I come down to visit
I talk about the world above
They tell me they miss it1

At the right time but the wrong place
I’m the son of god2
Virtue signal both ways just in case you forgot

Do you even care to know
Do you care?
Words on the pavement3
Do you even care to know?
Do you even care?

I put a hex above your bed
But I’ll never visit
The seasons change and so do I
Blink and you’ll miss it

At the right time but the wrong place
I'm an honest man
Straight face looking both ways
For the snakes in the grass

Do you even care to know
Do you even care?
Words on the pavement
Do you even care to know?
Do you even care?

Now watch all their faces
We’re off to the races

Now it’s hard to fight sleep
For the lessons we keep
And the way they cut deep
Now it’s hard to fight sleep
For the lessons we keep
And the way they cut deep

I put a hex above your bed
Blink and you’ll miss it

Do you even care to know
Do you even care?
Words on the pavement
Do you even care to know?
Do you even care?

Do you even care to know
Do you even care at all?
Words on the pavement
Do you even care to know?
You can’t

1 my mental mv is picturing a solo visit to mementos, communing with shadows...

2 forever thinking about the sign in the background of joker and crow's showtime that says "prodigal sons"

3 the Meaning™ i have ascribed to this is amaren disbelieving that anyone would put the same effort into him as he does for others.... "words on the pavement" is how he'd feel if he tried to open up: the words landing on the ground between them instead of being received.... am i reaching the moon yet. this fucker is so hard to assign songs to i'm doing my best out here

ow! (splidao!) [i like it, though]

akechi, light shuake

feels suitable for the akechi behind the pleasant face leading up to the engine room.

This encounter's a trap
And I don't even know where it's at
I've seen self-sabotage one thousand times before
Do you want me to go?
Do you want me to go?
'Cause you keep calling back

And I still have to bend the truth
it's not worth upsetting you
I've learned to be a shameless liar

Such forceful accusations and violent conversations
Help create a war that we keep fighting,
'cause we're soldiers in disguise1
We're in disguise

Adored by superficial Hollywood
Natural feelings don't feel like they should2
A rotten punchline when the joke's no good

And just when things start looking better
I like to kick them to the side
They say the grass is always greener
Until I spray the pesticide

So dysfunctional
Do you want me to go?
Do you want me to go?3
You keep coming back
We're done

I still have to bend the truth
I'm sure it's upsetting you4
We breed a bunch of little liars

She craves the contents of my loaded gun (Oh, Syrah)
Squeeze out a round onto your eager tongue
A gorgeous girl embracing womanhood
I'm on a date with instant gratitude
A good hard fuck should fix your attitude5

Caught in a romantic war, we keep on fighting
'Cause we're soldiers, yeah
Big bad soldiers, yeah
Fucking soldiers, soldiers in disguise
We're in disguise

Adored by superficial Hollywood
Natural feelings don't feel like they should
A rotten punchline when the joke's no good

And just when things start looking better
I like to kick you to the side
They say the grass is always greener
Until I spray the pesticide6

Syrah Syrah Syrah Syrah Syrah Syrah Syrah
You're always looking back

1 i like this as a representation of how akechi and amaren are pit against each other by their respective "sides" of a "war", while both pretending not to be up to anything at all. from akechi's perspective, he's thinking of the shido vs the pts level, while amaren will later learn of the god-ordained toxic yaoi level.

2 "superficial"! rank 3 keyword ゲット! i'm quite fond of "natural feelings don't feel like they should" to express the way akechi spends so much time under a constructed identity that he may lose sense of what his true feelings are. that's not an aspect that appears in canon, but it's interesting to consider, especially because akechi is someone who denies his own feelings to himself so thoroughly.

3 this repitition gives it a little bit of desperation. reminds me of when akechi moped at leblanc about feeling unwelcome. even though it seemed a bit like he was fishing for sympathy, he ended up being rather honest there, didn't he? his deepest desire to be wanted...

4 i like this slightly modified iteration because it brings amaren "into the loop"; that is, acknowledging that amaren knows akechi is lying, that amaren would rather they didn't have to do this, and akechi continuing to do so anyway.

5 i choose to read this stanza as the sort of sexy violent circumstance of shuake's duel, with bonus amaren masochism. unanalogize the "loaded gun" and analogize the "good hard fuck".

6 a wounding sentiment that reminds me of how hard akechi tried to deny the pts right up to the end.
